When Britain faced its darkest hour in 1940, Prime Minister Churchill sought a means to strike back at Germany. This led to the formation of the British Airborne Commando Units. The first of these units was No.2 Commando, which was renamed the 11th Special Air Service Battalion. Commando units operated effectively throughout Europe. On D-Day, they carried out airborne assaults into Normandy. In later campaigns, the Commando Units carried out their independent mission as well as providing support for the both the 82nd and 101st U.S. Airborne Divisions. This figure honors those brave men who fought so valiantly during Britain`s "Darkest Hour".
